# renaming root folder for wordpress site

 * I’ve built my wordpress site at a temporary url [http://www.mydomain.com/wp](http://www.mydomain.com/wp)
 * Now that the site is finished, I’d like to change the url to [http://www.mydomain/weddings](http://www.mydomain/weddings)
 * I thought I could simply rename the top level directory from ‘wp’ to ‘weddings’
   but when I typed in the url [http://www.mydomain/weddings](http://www.mydomain/weddings)
   I got errors!
 * I’m not moving any of the files or directories, I just want to rename the top
   level…
 * thanks to anyone that can lend some thoughts.

 * You needed to change the wordpress urls in your dashboard to reflect the new 
   directory name before you changed the directory name. Hop back into your ftp 
   client and rename the directory back to “wp”. Assuming nothing else has changed,
   that should let you back in.
 * Go back to your site and log in. Change the urls to the new path, save the changes,
   then change the directory name again and see what happens. Update your permalinks
   after you log back in. I hope I didn’t forget anything. 🙂
