No, not at the moment. WP doesn’t have functionality for renaming roles once they’ve been created. I’ve considered adding this feature but I like to avoid overwriting core WP database options when possible.

Assuming you don’t have a lot of users assigned to the role you want to change, a quick and dirty way is to simply clone the role with a new name. Then, you can delete the old role.

Hi Justin, thnx for the quick reply and info!

Just wondering then: where are the user roles translated into Dutch? I’m using the Dutch version of WordPress, and roles are somehow translated like this:

    – Administrator > Beheerder
    – Editor > Redacteur
    – Author > Auteur
    – Contributor > Schrijver
    – Subscriber > Abonnee

Prefer to keep this consistent site wide. That is, creating roles (Role Name and Role) in English, and somewhere create a Dutch translation which can be used when making content available for users with certain roles.

The core WP roles should be translated in the Dutch WordPress translation:

As for the plugin, there’s actually a bug right now with translations where the translated name doesn’t always show. I’m planning on releasing an update in the next week. So, role translations should be consistent.

There’s still no good way to translate custom roles without code though. I have an add-on plugin in mind for that.
