  • Hi there,

I know it is ethically wrong, but legally wise, is it permitted to remove all the credits involved in the footer of a purchased WordPress theme from ThemeForest under a Regular License?

I am mostly interested in removing the developer’s name and website link instead of the statement “Powered by WordPress”.

    Thank you in advance.

You’d need to ask them about any requirements of a purchased theme. As to WordPress, it’s fine – you can do whatever you want under GPL.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I thought the same as well, I am just expecting some feedback from someone who already purchased something from there already.

I have submitted a ticket at their website as well and I’m waiting.

Going through their license FAQ, I found this,

Do I have to credit the author of the item in my end product?

“No, it’s not mandatory to give the author credit. But we do suggest that if your end product has credits as part of its design, please credit the author. Also, as the author retains ownership of the item, you shouldn’t claim copyright in the item.”

How strong is the word shouldn’t here? Does it mean that I cannot use the following information at the footer,

    Company Name
    © Copyright 2013.
    All rights reserved.

or again, it is ethically implied? If the first condition applies, can I refer to the rights reserved concerning the content of the website excluding the design?

    Again, thank you.
