Support » Plugin: Yoast SEO: Search Index Purge » Removing plugin when attachment pages are no longer in the index

  • Resolved nathangdavidson

I had the issue resulting from the Yoast bug so I installed and activated the purge plugin back in June, as advised. This is the site

From Search Console I can see there are just 20 Web pages still indexed, and 4 images. This was 28 and 4 respectively last week, so I can see they are gradually being removed from the index, so that’s great. I seem to recall reading that this can take up to 6 months.

My question is, when there are no attachment pages left in the index, will they no longer appear in my sitemap (now I’ve changed the settings as advised, and do I at that stage remove the purge plugin, and mark all the related attachment errors in my Crawl Errors Search Console report as fixed (knowing they shouldn’t appear again if they’re not in the sitemap)?

    Many thanks,

    Hi Nathan,

When all the attachment pages are removed from the index, you can delete the Purge plugin and keep the redirect setting of the attachment URLs set to “Yes”.
Please note that all the URLs will still be present in the attachment sitemap in your site until you remove the Purge plugin.

    Many thanks for confirming this.

Sorry, can I ask one more question?

This might have nothing to do with the purge plugin but I thought I’d quickly ask all the same.

Whilst I now understand that I’ll shortly be able to mark the 410’s detailed in my crawl errors report in Search Console as fixed (once I’ve removed the purge plugin), I’m a little confused as to why I have some other crawl errors, which are images, that have the status code 404 rather than 410.

Do you have any idea why that might be?

    Here’s an example

Now this image was used on a Post which I have since converted to a Draft, which I 301 redirected.

But it does appear in the attchment part of the sitemap

If you’re able to shed any light on this I’d be very grateful.

Sorry to chase, are you able to comment on this one?

    Hi Nathan,

Sorry to hear about the issue you are having with some URLs being a 404 instead of a 410. This does not look like behavior we expect from the Search Index Purge plugin.

In order to make this issue known to our developers, we ask that you create a GitHub issue about the issues you are having with Search Index Purge plugin.

To create a new issue, please go to our Search Index Purge plugin Github repo: and click the big green button that says “New Issue” and fill out as much info as you can on the issue. Screenshots also always help.

Our developers will then review the issue and take it from there.

    Ok thanks, done!
