Support » Plugins » Removing plug-in without FTP

  • Hi!

I am a new user of WordPress. Unfortunately, my website has been victim of a lot of spam lately, so much that now when you look up my website it says “This site may be compromised.” I wanted to download Akismet to help me deal with the ton of spam I am receiving as comments, but when I try to install the plug-in I get this message:

    Downloading install package from…

    Unpacking the package…

    Installing the plugin…

    Destination folder already exists. /home3/nysylcor/public_html/nydreamact/wp-content/plugins/akismet/

    Plugin install failed.

I have read in various threads that I have to uninstall any folders with the /akismet directory using FTP. However, I don’t have access to FTP. My website has been all done through the wordpress interface.

Can anyone please guide on how I can make this plugin work? Your help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

  • You have got three choices:

    1. Learn how to use FTP and delete the folder – Will take longer then option 2, but will be a huge benefit in the long run.
    2. Log into your website hostings control panel and find the ‘File Manager’. It might be called something else, but it will be pretty similar.
    3. Contact your hosting companies support team and ask them to delete it for you.
