    I’ve put a copy of header.php in my child theme and removed the pingback
   line but it still shows in the head on the site?

 * On my test it worked. Do you use any caching plugin or CDN?

 * No I don’t but now that you mention it I’m at WPEngine and I believe they do 
   though I’m not sure of the details re: what, how long. It’s gone now so that 
   must have been the issue. Thanks!

 * Right, but you made me think about it, because anyway I disable trackbacks from
   WP settings, so why not to remove one more reference from the header 🙂
