    Hey everyone,

I looked through the archives but was not able to locate a thread with an answer to the question I have.

If I have a blog with parent, child, and grandchild categories, what happens if I would like to delete either a child or grandchild category? Do the associated posts automatically get nested under the next available parent?

Also, would all of those old URLs auto redirect?

I figured this might be something built into WordPress, or something that might require a plugin.

    Appreciate the help.

  • If you delete the category then the posts would just have that category removed (meaning, those posts will have NO category)

    To update categories in bulk:
    1. go to the category page
    2. click the “number” next to category under “count” to display all the posts within that category.
    3. click the “select all” checkbox
    4. Select the “Edit” option in the dropdown and click “Apply”
    5. In the category box, change the cateogry to what you want.
    6. Click update
    7. delete category once count = 0

NOTE: This only shows 20 posts at a time so you may need to do it a few times before you get all posts

OK I see – do you know if WP will automatically redirect the old URLs to the new now that it is changed?

    I can’t say with 100% certainty.
Best bet is to try one and see.
If it doesn’t work, install Redirection – it will auto-redirect any post URL changes

Also one thing above you mentioned would not apply here – the posts do in fact have a category – the grandchild. It’s a few child categories that need to be deleted.

I guess I will delete them and see what happens.

I can confirm that if you delete a child category that has grandchildren, the grandchildren will then nest under the next available parent and all URLs redirect.
