Well I guess the white space thing will be CSS, but I tried removing relevant “search” code from header.php and it broke the site, so replaced it. Though that might just reduce that fat white space band too, but…
anyone?
Are you using a child theme? That’s the first step before making any changes.
Post a link to your site so someone can look at the relevant CSS code to the specific space you want to change. Or use Firebug to look at which CSS is creating the space you want to reduce. Removing the search can also be done in the CSS using “display: none;” for that element.
If you are only going to make CSS changes you could use jetpack custom CSS rather than a child theme.
OK – I found that by removing the title in the header options panel, not only was the search field removed, but white space eliminated. (Just had to add the title in my header graphic instead)
Cheers
