Remove Nav Bar box

I would like to remove the navbar box (i think my site would look cleaner without that grey shading) but obviously leave what’s inside it e.g. my social icons, menu labels etc.
Reading the support guide it looked as easy as:

.navbar.notresp .navbar-inner {
display:            none;
}

But this removes everything inside the navbar box which obviously isn’t very useful.

Anyone any ideas?
