Support » Theme: Minimatica » Remove folded banner in Minimatica

  • I have been searching the web for several days, trying to discover the easiest way to delete the black fold over banner that appears on a post thumbnail in the Minimatica blog.

    There are discussions about this issue on the Internet, but no real solution and/or the threads are dead.

    I’d truly appreciate help. Thanks so much!

  • just installed a new wp to test themes, i needed to do that again anyway. I was messing with a client site before so I was limited to what i could test. Now you can expect tried and true advice.

    when you’re ready, i’m going to advise that you save your css mods and activate another theme. then delete minimatica, and reinstall it, and put your css back.
    I will then give you the exact mods which I will test, and you can see the result on my site if there’s any questions about what you want to acheive.

    here’s my demo
    http://www.foursticks.net/themetester/

    this is the entire loop-slider.php,
    http://pastebin.com/SvbndqT4

    just supply the appropriate id’s in this part of the code near the top:

    18.'post__in' => array(1,10,15,7)

    then, change category.php to this:
    http://pastebin.com/jXzrdyXU

    then, just upload the loop-slider-categories.php that we made before.
    Categories.php will use it, where it will link to posts as ussual.

    Then, if you apply your previous css mods, it shoudl be all good 😉

    my site doesn;t have the css mods, so the home slider still shows the post titles and excerpts.. but the image is liinked to the category, the category link appears as well.

    regarding posts_per_page for the slider, I remembered, ..even though there is a posts_per_page setting in loop-slider, the actulal setting is in functions.php, lessthan 1/4 down the page you’ll see:

    function minimatica_paged_posts( $query ) {
    	if( (
    		( $query->is_home() && 'gallery' == minimatica_get_option( 'homepage_view' ) ) ||
    		( $query->is_category() && 'gallery' == minimatica_get_option( 'category_view' ) ) ||
    		( $query->is_tag() && 'gallery' == minimatica_get_option( 'tag_view' ) ) ||
    		( $query->is_author() && 'gallery' == minimatica_get_option( 'author_view' ) ) ||
    		( $query->is_archive() && 'gallery' == minimatica_get_option( 'archive_view' ) )
    		) && ( ! is_single() )
    	)
    		$query->set( 'posts_per_page', '4' );
    }
    endif;

    here, you can adjust how many posts appear in the slider before it pages.

    If you wanted a different number, depending on what type of template is in use, (like category vs. home page) it looks like each can be adjusted here, I’d just have to play with it a bit, probably add the posts_per_page argument to the get_option for is_category.

    I had mentioned before, if the posts per page exceeds a certain number (I found it to be 5) the css may have to be adjusted.

    .kwicks .slide {
    width:140px;
    }

    you may also notice that when there are only two posts in a category (such as with category 2 in my demo) , they don’t display quite right. This is a bug in this theme, you’d have to mod the css in the same way as above to correct it.

    new version of loop-slider.php, it’s what I’m currently using in my demo

    http://pastebin.com/EuKXqtLC

    I think you’ll like it better, however you’ll want to try it without your css mods first..

    and if you want to remove the footer menu for the home page like I did, use this at the bottom of style.css:

    .home #access {
    display:none;
    }

    the footer menu will still display on all other slider pages.

    Fixing the car today so will have to come to this later.

    I am slightly concerned that I have made other mods in the past for removing sidebar and footer, comments etc, so will have to start again with all that if I reinstall the theme…. if it needs to happen though I will do it

    do you know why I ended up with all those extra php files? When i uploaded the loop-slider-catagories.php i just copied it from the desktop to the theme contents folder (via the web disk)

    Is this the right way to ‘upload’ the file?

    Ahhhh its ok I will just copy all the css i think I modified in the past and put it back in the new theme. I know which php’s I modified because I copied the origninal files.

    Please let me know about uploading a file to the theme contents folder though, I would like to know if I am doing something wrong.

    I have ran through everything you suggest and think I can do it all. The only bit I am not sure about is when you say ‘provide appropriate id’s’ sorry, I just don’t know how to go about that, this is my first experience of using code and I love it, but I am basically stupid on here.

    18.'post__in' => array(1,10,15,7)

    add id’s to this whaaaaaat? :p

    If it had to guess;

    If the page i want to link the first post of the slider to is;

    http://designpush.co.uk/?cat=15

    Do i use 15? Is the id from the permalink?

    I don’t think there’s any problem with the way you are uploading.

    I couldn’t tell you why you have extra php files, the only way I know to get them is to add them via upload or create them on the server.

    The post id is in the url when you edit a post. It’s a number, it will say ID=388 or what ever.

    the other mods you described sound easy, we can fix what ever doesn’t get saved I’m sure.

    the numbers in the array bracket are the id’s

    18.'post__in' => array(1,10,15,7)

    the array is way to ad filters (arguments) to a query, which is a call to the post(s) , this query has a filter which only get posts with those id’s.

    you’ll notice the other filters are telling the query to ignore “sticky-posts”, how many posts to display, and if the posts should be paged, instead of all on one page.

    <?php // this is the first query:
    	global $wp_query, $query_string;
    	$paged = get_query_var( 'paged' );

    //this is the array of filters:
    $args = array(
    		'posts_per_page' => 4,
    		'paged' => $paged,
    		'ignore_sticky_posts' => 1
                        );

    there’s another query after that which works with the first one, get’s a bit more complicated with that.

    but then there is finally the “output” meaning, what part of the post is displayed? full content? excerpt? images? thumbnail? ect.

    this is the first output in our template:

    //this part of another query, it will refer to the paramaters set up by the previous query:
    <?php while( have_posts() ) : the_post(); ?>

    //this is the first thing output:
    <?php $thumbnail = null; ?>
    				<?php if( has_post_thumbnail() ) : ?>
    					<?php $thumbnail = wp_get_attachment_image_src( get_post_thumbnail_id(), 'slider-thumb' ); ?>

    the output is the part that can be styled with css.

    I’m not great at explaining this but maybe it will help you undertand some basics.

    new feature:
    if you decide to play with the number of posts per page in the slider (in functions.php) you’ll find the slide sizes don’t always work out right.

    here’s css which will change the size of the slide depending on the category:

    .category-uncategorized .kwicks .slide {
    width:140px;
    }

    .category-category-3 .kwicks .slide {
    width:320px;
    }

    I have two categories which have been adjusted with the above, as mentioned previously, displaying 2 slides, or more than 5 slides, require this adjustment.

    the categories are indicated in the css with the “category slug” which you will find on the editing page for that category.

    and, if you want the category name to display when on a category page, (like in my demo) put this at the very bottom of loop-slider-categories.php.

    <p style="color: #fff; margin-left:10px;">
    <?php
    $category = get_the_category();
    echo $category[0]->cat_name;
    ?></p>
