Remove Featured Image in Posts

I post photography on my blog and don’t feel like I need a featured image for each post. In my posts the featured image is a grey box where an image would normally be and I would like to remove that and just have it go straight down to the content with the description on the right. I know there is the option to remove the featured image on my post settings, but it just leaves that grey box there.
