Remove categories from front page?

Is there any way to archive the categories – maybe archive is not the right term to use. I want to remove the categories from the front page – I have categories for each student in 2007; 2008 brings a new class of students – I want those visible on the front page and the 2007 students categories to disappear (only because they will, in all probability, not be used again BUT I don’t want to lose the information)
