This plugin started out as a relatively simple plugin that offered relatively simple configuration and satisfactory features but it has been purchased by SendLayer and recently a lot of new development has been done on it. It is totally different now.

For the WordPress administrator that wants “the works” for an SMTP plugin and who is willing/able to pay for the features that used to be free (such as email logs) and who isn’t too worried about plugin size then I think this plugin would be a good choice. As far as I can tell it still performs okay and the developers seem to be quality. The plugin provides a LOT of functionality via the configuration screens now.

However, for my purposes I’m a little more concerned with plugin size and providing functionality that is absolutely minimal and laser focused, which seems to me that this plugin has strayed from, so I’ll be looking for a replacement plugin soon.

But I do think this plugin has been reliable to date and I think it is likely a good fit for 90% or more of WordPress site owners. SendLayer seems to be aggressively adding features and it seems it is adding some nice value-adds. It is just a matter of whether your WordPress site needs such a robust SMTP plugin or not.

    Hi @shaunek

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We’re sorry to hear that, while you can see the value in our adjustments and new features, the size difference or leanness is what you liked about Easy WP SMTP.

    Size Difference

We understand where you are coming from and as you mentioned, the recent size increase is due to our latest adjustments which include new features such as:

    • The SendLayer, Mailgun, Sendinblue, and SMTP.com email provider integrations.
    • As well as Debug Events – logging all email-sending errors and debug events.

Despite this size increase, we will ensure that Easy WP SMTP remains optimized in terms of functionality as well as file size over time.

    Logs

Please note that if you are directly updating from the previous version that had the debug log feature enabled, you should see the option for the old debug logs in our Easy WP SMTP > Settings > Misc section.

Outside of the old feature, debug logs are now found in our Tools > Debug Events section. Failed emails are always logged, but you can also enable the debug mode and all emails would be logged with the basic info.

Again, we’re sorry to hear that your concerns, but at least hope that the above information helps, and we also hope that you’ll give Easy WP SMTP another shot in the future. Again we thank you for your feedback.

Thanks for pointing out that the logging feature I use on occasion is still available. Preesh!

Also, although file size of the plugin is important I should admit I haven’t done any performance testing between the 1.x versions and the current 2.x version of this plugin to see if frontend or WP Admin performance has degraded at all. @dakeg You said that your team is trying to make sure it remains optimized, but perhaps if you are able to share any performance details that you have captured between 1.x and 2.x versions that would help me and others decide that the performance hasn’t decreased?

    Hey @shaunek

    You’re welcome.

Easy WP SMTP has gotten bigger because we added support for other mailers, but the code for the mailers that are not in use is not used if you only use the Other SMTP mailer option. So performance should not degrade compared to 1.x.

We do not currently have exact metrics to share, but at this stage, there is not a noticeable difference in performance for Easy WP SMTP once you upgrade to 2.x
