Support » Plugin: Relevanssi - A Better Search » Relevanssi so slow that it hurts – any improvement in sight?

  • Hi Mikko,

My site has now just under 1000 posts of maybe 400 words of text each, and ANY search takes 20 sec or more…(!) 🙁

I have made all speed adjustments suggested on the settings page (such as limited to 100 posts).

I wonder how much bigger sites like Amazon etc achieve good search speeds. – Is there any chance you can significantly speed up the plugin?

(Because otherwise, to my deepest regret, I have to disable the plugin … that I have praised so much on my site(!) – Now, the praise just makes it embarassing, really.)

    Thanks Mikko.

That is really, really slow, and not the usual performance for Relevanssi. I just timed a search on my site (1100 posts, search for common word with 500 hits), and it took two seconds from pressing enter to loading the page.

Bigger sites like Amazon achieve good speeds by a) using lots of very expensive hardware and b) using professionally developed search engines that are not free and done by single hobby programmer.

For more robust search solutions, there’s for example Yolink – but where Relevanssi is free or $39.95, Yolink can cost several hundreds of dollars per year. You very much get what you pay for.

Anyway, it seems to me your server is slow, not so much Relevanssi, so you may want to consider external search solutions, like Google Custom Search.

Hey thanks so much for your reply Mikko. I will check the server speed, I haven’t yet had a reason to complain about it in general though.

hmmm, so the plugin wouldn’t perform well with a blog with 60 000 posts ?

Well, if it’s not the server speed in general, then it’s something specific to your site that’s making Relevanssi this slow. It’s not the amount and size of your posts, though., you can only find out by testing, but it is quite likely you’ll run into some kind of performance issues, yes.

Relevanssi is designed for thousands of posts, not tens of thousands of posts.

I too have had to disable this plugin – it was also taking 20+ seconds to return results – I have about 300 pages, 300 post and 1000 custom post types.

I disabled it and the default wordpress search comes back in less than a second!

Its a shame – any chance you can give us some clues on where to start with debugging relevannsi ??

Default WordPress search is something quite different from Relevanssi, so comparing the two makes very little sense.

Relevanssi should be able to handle such numbers with no problems. I’d start debugging by timing the process of the search to see what it is that’s taking so long. Does enabling the “limit searches” option help? If it doesn’t, does setting the limit lower (say 50) help?
