Support » Plugin: Jetpack by » Related posts messed up when a post has no image

In general, Jetpacks related posts are working very nice on our site. It shows 3 related posts below the sharer line.

The only problem occurs because some of our oldest posts do not have a suitable image or none at all.
If either 1 or 2 of the related posts have an image and the other(s) don’t, the text excerpt of the post without an image is merged and blended with the image(s). You should see it with the link.

How can this be fixed? Maybe we can define a default image which Jetpack will use for all posts without pictures?
Or just fix the text display of course.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hi there,

Here’s a great guide on how to use a default image as a fallback:

Thanks a lot, this is working fine!

    Well, almost perfect!

@jeherve I found a minor problem with your solution, maybe there is a workaround?

The unchanged “related posts” will use the video thumbnail of a video post (which is containing a Youtube URL only), but when the filter is in effect, this picture is replaced with the default image too.

    Thanks for the feedback!

That’s indeed a byproduct of how Jetpack is built. The fallback image we added is not added at the very end of the image checking process, but only at the end of the process that looks for images within the post content. After that process comes another, that looks for other non-image elements (like video shortcodes), and then builds an image from that.

I am afraid that can’t be changed without changing the way Jetpack works as a whole. If you think that should be changed, I would recommend that you create an issue here:

I’ll be happy to chime in there with more details!
