• This has been a problem for a very long time. Some of my blogs, especially the primary install, will have pages go into a permanent redirect loop errors for no apparent reason. The solution? Go to the permalink settings, use “custom” but enter the same permalink, click and save and then all works just fine.

I can’t seem to find any cause for it to happen periodically but it just does and only with WordPress. My primary blog on the root has the least number of plugins so it’s definitely not those. This problem occurs on the root blog more than other blogs. The home page is fine – it’s just the internal pages that get caught up in this issue.

I’ve seen others have this problem with no solutions. Hoping there is an answer or something that needs to be cleaned out in the database.

Problems like this, that happens periodically or intermittently have been caused by server problems. If it’s a WordPress problem, it may not work by just re-saving permalinks settings, or if it is solved that way it will remain solved.

Have you ever taken up the issue with your host?

Thanks – not the host. I run a dedicated server and this issue crops up after migrating to a new server and also at a second colo facility.

I decided to remove every single mod relating to URLs other than the permalink. I had something that removed the category slug pretty well and then decided to ditch it and rename the slug. We’ll see if that helps as virtually nothing I know removed the category slug successfully and I realized that the only one that truly worked was still in effect globally although only 2 blogs were affected. We’ll see how it goes. Thanks for the reply.

Kristina – No… its not the category removal plugin. I just realized that I changed my URLs by removing it, not happy, but it is what it is. I keep having occasional issues – it just locked up again, fixed again by resetting the premalink.
