Hi there, this is a feature request.

I run a Woocommerce site with loads of places where client data gets stored. From Woocommerce itself, to various plugins which either send emails or otherwsie help manage the user experience.

But I can never give third party developers access to the site or even a staging copy because that would be a security breach without a direct confidentiality and GDPR agreement. As you can imagine, that is very inconvenient. It’s frustrating for the developers who can’t get to see evidence of a bug, and it means I often just live with low-level bugs. Occasionally I have attempted to clean the site by deleting anything that could have personal data. But that takes hours.

Most people probably just give access anyway and ignore the law. But I won’t. So I think we need a central WP location where developers can register where they are storing personal information that would need to be anonymize if a staging copy was to be made available to someone outside the organisation. Other plugins can perform the anonymization. Either irreversibly, or reversibly. I’d be happy just with a SQL script generation wizard that I can run on the staging database

    Thanks.

I don’t have an answer for your ‘anonymization’ issue but if you have problems with your site then you should probably ask here as we might be able to suggest something to solve the issue and/or point you to someone else who should be able to help you without you needing to provide login info.

We volunteers here on these support forums are not allowed to accept login info… The same goes for the plugin and theme authors who use this WordPress dot org site to support their plugins and themes.

we are all well versed in doing our tasks within the confines of these rules. And will tell you when you might need to seek professional support.

Thank you. I understand that. This is really an issue with plugin providers who run their support outside wp dot org. There are quite a few of them. Most of the official Woocommerce plugin providers, and many others. The reason I came here is not because I need support here but because I really think this is a wider issue that should properly be dealt with in WP core.

If I can anonymize a staging copy of my site, plugin providers can see much more quickly what the issue is. And the options for engaging a developer are much better.

Most plugin developers are understanding about the problem and do their best without access. Only one (Elementor) actually refused to support me if I din’t give access to the site.
