    The content is floated left, the sidebar is floated right, so to reduce the gap is to increase the width of one or both, but doing that you might ruin the design.

    and because you (already) expanded the site’s width, there are other stuffs to consider too, like the $content_width in function.php must be redeclared to accommodate the new content’s width for embeded contents and the font-size should be a bit bigger for large screen to keep the right proportion of overall look and feel.

    Remember, 2012 is responsive, any changes in CSS should be made in both outside and inside mediaqueries.
