 * Hello support,
 * Hope you are doing well today.
 * I was playing around in a wp-staging environment on my shared hosting plan.
 * Checked the Memcached and the Redis connections in W3. (They are both activated
   in cPanel > PHP Extensions.)
 * W3 said Memcached is not available, but W3 seemed to be able to connect to Redis.
 * I doubt if it was a real connection, because the Redis Object Cache plugin, and
   the Litespeed Cache plugin, are not able to connect to Redis.
 * Probably W3 just checked the PHP Redis Extension and found it to be activated?
 * Maybe you can explain a little 🙂
 * Thanks in advance.

 * Hello [@ms100](https://wordpress.org/support/users/ms100/)
 * Thank you for reaching out and I am happy to assist you with this.
 * W3 Total Cache recognizes installed php extensions. So in the case of Redis or
   Memcached, W3 Total Cache needs to detect the php extension installed and activation
   in the Cpanel does not necessarily mean that the PHP extension is installed properly
   so yes probably W3TC detected something however this may not work as expected.
 * So to Clarify you need a [Redis php extension](https://github.com/phpredis/phpredis)
   to use Redis with the W3 Total Cache, and a [Memcached php extension](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqZg0zGe0Jk)
   to use Memcached as a caching method in W3TC.
 * I hope this helps!
 * Thanks!

 * Hi Marko,
   Thanks for the reply. I do have the php extensions but Redis and Memcached
   are not installed/available on the shared hosting server. Thanks for the support
   🙂
