    hi,

I need to do a redirects via cpanel . I did it early and it messed up my permalinks.
I managed to put it right by doing the magic buttons again
I need to go back to my Cpanel on my web host and do this redirect again.
what steps do I need to take when something on my httacces is gonna change, like now with the redirects? do I need to first activate the default mode on BP and go back to Cpanel and do the redirect and then activate security mode or shall I just do the magic buttons again after doing the redirect without activating the default mode ?
    what’s the correct procedure?

    thanks!

I do not recommend that you do redirects in cPanel or use the cPanel HotLink Protection Tool either. Whoever created these cPanel tools had a great idea, but unfortunately it was not done very well and actually causes problems.

What happens is the cPanel tools are designed to look at your existing .htaccess file and then try and interpret your existing .htaccess code and incorporate/import it into the cPanel tool. This works correctly some of the time, but most of the time the .htaccess code is not interpreted correctly and you end up with gibberish in the cPanel tool, you have website problems, links are broken, your website crashes, etc etc etc.

Simple solution do not use the cPanel tools and instead use BPS Custom Code to add your .htaccess redirect code.

See this Forum post on what, how and where to create and add redirect .htaccess code for your website: http://forum.ait-pro.com/forums/topic/htaccess-redirect-code-where-do-i-add-redirect-htaccess-code/

The problem is that I have two .htaccess files because my WP site it’s on a directory.
like this: http://www.mysite/news/ (the news it’s where wordpress is, the rest is not WP)
The .htaccess on my root folder has all the redirects .
I just want to redirect one domain to another
do I have to manually paste the code onto the root .htaccess and then paste the same 301 code onto the BPS Custom Code? there are 5 boxes on the BPS Custom Code page.. which one is the right one to add a redirect?
    thanks!

Oh then if the redirects are in another .htaccess file for another website then you would not and probably cannot put them in the .htaccess file in the news site. Most likely they would not work correctly. At this point you should get your Host involved to help out since they can probably do something with or about the cPanel issue/problem.

it’s all on the same website, same account. Yesterday I deleted by mistake the redirect from domain A to domain B and now I want to put it back.
Previously I had done a redirect via cpanel for the non www to the www , this is when my permalinks stopped working and I went back to CPanel and I deleted the domain A to domain B redirect by mistake , I wanted to delete the www to non www.
So I was getting a warning on BPS and luckily by doing the magic butting again , the permalinks worked again.

So, If I did the redirect via Cpanel (or even if I paste the redirect code onto my root .httaccess file) and then I go back to BPS and do the magic buttons again, would that be ok?? I don’t really want to mess up anything in case the magic buttons don’t do their magic this time..

The AutoMagic buttons will always do the same thing each time so you do not need to worry about that. Yep, I think this is a winner – “So, If I did the redirect via Cpanel…and then I go back to BPS and do the magic buttons again, would that be ok…”. Give it a whirl.

I will as soon as get the chance to get to my CP !! and hopefully no issues

    Some strange thing happened.
I tried to do the redirect on my CP and it’s not saved. I clicked saved , got the confirmation page but when looking at my list of redirects it’s not there and the redirect doesn’t work either. I tried two times.
I looked at my .httaccess file (on the root) folder and the redirect it’s not there either.
Could BPS preventing from saving this redirect??

Yep, BPS can block cPanel writing to your .htaccess file if it is locked or if this is for your other site and you have manually changed the file permissions then you can also block cPanel writing by doing that manually.

Unlock your your .htaccess files if they are locked. locked means 404 read only permissions. unlocked means standard 644 permissions.

my .htaccess has 0644 permission and it says last modified this morning (when I tried to add the redirect)

Ok then this is a problem with cPanel itself if your .htaccess files are not locked. Nothing else in BPS would block cPanel except for if your .htaccess files were locked. I can only suggest continuing to fiddle with cPanel and if you cannot get it to work then contact your Host support folks.

yeah, I don’t think this is a BP issue anymore.. I’ll look into it…

    Thanks!

    Borderline11,

Did you ever figure out what setting to fix in cPanel? I have a similar issue.
