Support » Networking WordPress » Redirect loop on wp-admin of path site/.htaccess problems!!! HELP!

  • Hi folks,

I’m a non-techie newbie to wordpress. I have spent a day searching, but I’m on a deadline, and really need help over this latest hump:

I installed a network/multi-site, for use with the multi-site language switcher plugin. I created the path for my second page, the one that will be translated into a different language. However, when I click on that page’s dashboard to go in and build the site, I get a Redirect loop error message that suggests I empty the cache etc. (which I have tried).

My research tells me this may have something to do with an alteration I need to make to my .htaccess file, but I have no idea where it is. I think it might be somewhere in my ftp server (I use GoDaddy hosting) but I also read it is a hidden file and have no clue how to locate/edit it.

Can anyone shed some light? I’m on a deadline!

You’ll want to go to their helpdocs for help with how to use their system 🙂 Most of the time, there’s decent directions. WP we can help, but each host is a little different.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the response, Mika.

I have created an htaccess file (as well as a blogs.dir directory, containing nothing, which evidently I need too?), and I tried both of the subfolder codes mentioned here:

“Path” sites are “sub-folders,” right? Or are they subdomains?

Anyway, neither of them worked. I still get the redirect loop.

For a CSS that’s considered very “user friendly,” I have to say I’m pretty surprised at the level of detail I have to go into just to get the 2nd, translated version of one website to work!

Can anyone help? Please? This redirect loop is killing me and I have to finish this site soon.

aaaaand, by css, I mean cms. Shows you how much I know. Let this be a sign that I need serious help.

FWIW? You’re doing highly advanced work. WP is user friendly. Multiple languages, no matter the app, is not. And Multisite is at the base level an intermediate tool. Not for beginners 🙂

Subfolders means your sites look like this:

    Subdomains look like this:

    1) Which one are you using?
    2) What’s in your .htaccess?
    3) Did you delete all your browser cookies.

Yes Mika, I think I had unrealistic expectations, drawn from my previous experience building a blog with wordpress. 🙂

    1) subfolders. My second one is

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
    # add a trailing slash to /wp-admin
    RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?wp-admin$ $1wp-admin/ [R=301,L]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f [OR]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d
    RewriteRule ^ - [L]
    RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?(wp-(content|admin|includes).*) wp/$2 [L]
    RewriteRule ^([_0-9a-zA-Z-]+/)?(.*\.php)$ wp/$2 [L]
    RewriteRule . index.php [L]

    3)Yes, multiple times.

Also, I installed a redirect debugging plugin to try to help get to the bottom of it, but everything is seeming to advanced for me to interpret. This is what it tells me about my redirected dashboard page:

    ( i ) WordPress Redirect in D:\hosting\10302942\html\wp-includes\canonical.php on line 521
    Call Stack
    # Function Location

    8 call_user_func_array( array (0 => class betterRedirectsPlugin, 1 => ‘wp_redirect’), array (0 => ‘’, 1 => 302) ) ../wp-includes/plugin.php:173

In addition to a statement at the top : Notice: Undefined variable: pagenow in D:\hosting\10302942\html\wp-content\plugins\portfolio-slideshow\inc\metabox.php on line 22

That looks like you’re on Windows… Switch to Linux, things will be MUCH easier with Multisite.
