Redirect 301 question. (Yes, another one.) (3 posts)

Hi. I'm trying to set up 301 redirects that will redirect from a Movable Type blog to a WordPress blog. I've searched the web, and looked at earlier threads here, but I've been unable to get anything to work. Here is exactly what I would like to do.

The actual webpage I want to redirect it located here:

    http://www.domain.com/2008/01/filename.html (a static MT url)

I would like it to redirect to:

    http://www.domain.com/wp/filename (a dynamic WP url)

Note that the second URL is at the same domain, but it does not have an extension.

I'm on DreamHost. From the DreamHost "home" directory, the full path to the domain is:

    /home/domain/domain.com/etc.

I've tried many variations of Redirect 301 that I've found here and elsewhere, but none of thexm work. Dunno why.

I am not certain in which folder the .htaccess should go.

Also, there already exist .htaccess files in the folders 'domain' and 'domain.com'. These already contain text, and I am trying to add the Redirect to those existing files.

Is it possible that these .htaccess files are conflicting with each other, or that the stuff that is already in there is conflicting with the Redirects that I'm trying to add?

I know this isn't a WP problem directly, but I'm eager to move to from MT to the far superior WP, but have been unable to find a satisfactory import/conversion process.

    All help appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

Check with these plugins to set 301 redirection into your domain:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/redirection/
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/quick-pagepost-redirect-plugin/

    Thanks,

Thanks for that suggestion. Those are both very cool plugins. But unless I'm missing something (very possible!), they can redirect within a single site, and they can redirect from the current site (where the plugins are installed) to another site, but they can't redirect from an OLD site (where the plugin is NOT installed) to the new one, even if both sites are on the same domain.

In this case, the site I want to redirect from is a Movable Type site to a WP site.

    In other words:

    FROM: http://www.domain.com/page.html
    TO: http://www.domain.com/wp/page
