Support » Plugin: Yoast SEO » Recurring “new taxonomy” notification

Whenever I log into my WP dashboard I’m greeted by a notification from Yoast: “It looks like you’ve added a new taxonomy to your website. We recommend that you review your Settings under Categories & tags.”

It doesn’t state which taxonomy. And I hadn’t made any changes prior to the notification. Indeed If I make a fictitious change in a taxonomy just to be able to save changes, the message disappears. Only to reappear seconds later.

    This is annoying of course.

We understand you’re receiving the notification where it says ‘It looks like you’ve added a new type of taxonomy to your website. We can see how this might give you some uncertainty. Don’t worry we’re here to help you.

This message tells us that our plugin identified one new taxonomy within the website. This notification is added to help you to check the recently added taxonomy or content type to optimize it based on your interests. If you believe, you have already optimized the content types and taxonomies, please follow the steps below:

    1. First, navigate to Yoast SEO > Search Appearance > click the Content Types tab > and click the Save changes button without making any changes.
    2. Then navigate to Yoast SEO > Search Appearance > Taxonomies > and click the Save changes button without making any changes
    3. If the notification still appears: Kindly Install and activate the Yoast Test Helper plugin. Then navigate to Tools Yoast Test > Locate the YOAST SEO section and then click on “Reset Notices“. Then check if the notice is permanently removed or not.

    I hope this helps!

    1. There is no item called Yoast SEO > Search Appearence. There are inside the Posts and Pages settings in the Content Types tab. The Save Changes button is not visible on neither unless I disable “Show posts in search results”.
    2. There is no Yoast SEO > Search Appearance > Taxonomies >
    3. I installed the Helper plugin and clicked the Reset Notifications button. It removes the notification alright. However, as soon as I enter WP Dashboard > Appearance > Themes this notifications reappears instantly.

So, what is this? In addition I get confused because there are two choices for categories, two for tags and two for types in the Categories & tags menu.

    Thanks for the feedback, @sandalsand.

I apologize for the confusion. There’d be no Save button unless you truly make changes. You can toggle the button OFF for the Show posts/pages in search results option and save changes then back ON again.

    1. It’s in WordPress > Yoast SEO > Settings > Content Types > Search Appearance.
    2. Check WordPress > Yoast SEO > Settings > Categories & tags > Search Appearance for Taxonomies
    3. I’m sorry that the notification is persistent. Our developers are awrae and a fix is underway. In the meantime, you can ignore it, though I know it’s annoying.

The two choices for categories, two for tags and two for types, are because another custom post type or taxonomy uses that same name. We have a feature request currently to resolve the ambiguity when categories appear twice in our new settings UI. You can follow its progress here.

May 29, 2023 I have the same problem.

I am constantly getting this same annoyance as well on ALL of the sites where I have Yoast installed, both premium and free. What is causing this and how to stop it? I need to be able to quickly zoom in on my client sites and fix issues and when the Yoast menu is constantly showing up with the red dot to tell me this, it is REALLY annoying. This happens on sites where I make minor content adjustments on an existing page. This happens on sites where I do absolutely nothing except log in.

Is it the case that Automatic Updates to plugins could cause this? Just like these updates, why can’t Yoast just HANDLE IT automatically as well. This really slows down my day when I have to do this for bunches of sites.

It’s obviously been a problem for awhile because the canned support response isn’t even current with the Yoast interface. You can’t follow the instructions as they are presented.

C’mon guys – you’re better than this. Please fix this annoyance.

I am using Yoast on several sites and I’m also getting a recurring “new taxonomy” notification on one of my sites which differs from the others in being the only one with the “Salient” theme. Because the current versions of Yoast do highlight the taxonomy that it thinks is new, I can see it is a taxonomy that is added by this theme.

So you can look into this again, Yoast can show which one is the concerned taxonomy and then you might find the culprit. But I started a new thread specifically about the recurring notification with Salient theme: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/recurring-notification-for-new-content-type-global-sections-by-salient-theme/
