Rectangular avatar?

I know avatars are supposed to be square, but I have a legacy site that expects them to be non-square, and I’m certain it used to display the full image. I tried

get_wp_user_avatar(get_the_author_meta(‘ID’), ‘original’);

but I still get an image that appears pre-truncated (possibly by WordPress?) Any hack to accomplish this?
