I’m trying to setup general forums for everyone to view but one private forum for Beta testers.
In the Beta tester forum I’ve assigned it to group 1 and added one user to this group. In the bbPress sidebar I’ve added the (Private Groups) recent topics widget.
Testing with a user not assigned to group 1 it does not show the private forum but it does show the recent topics (or replies if I use that widget) from the private forum. If I click on one if these it goes to a 404 page.
    Thanks for your help.

ok thanks, I’ll have a look in my test site and see if I can replicate

I can’t replicate immediately, doesn’t mean that there isn’t a problem, just that I can’t see what you are seeing.

That is the behaviour that I would expect from the original bbpress recent topics widget

    1. can you tell me what version of private groups you are using?
    2. what level of access the user with no group set has eg participant/moderator
    3. can you confirm that you don’t have visibility set in dashboard>settings>bbp private groups forum visibility

    Thanks

ok, found what was causing it. I need to users to upload an unsupported filetype as a post attachment so the only way I found to do that was create a child theme and override the functions.php.
When I switched back to the main theme private groups was working as expected 🙂
The only issue now is when I switch back to the child theme the bbpress wp tweaks sidebar does not show, but that’s not your problem. Thanks for taking a look.

for bbpress tweaks I’ve found that doing the following sometimes makes it work again !

    Deactivate bbpress tweaks
    Dashboard>plugins>bbpress tweaks>deactivate

    Go into widgets
    Dashboard>appearance>widgets

And look at the bottom of the left hand side. You’ll see an “inactive sidebar”, with your entries on
Below this is an “inactive widgets”
Drag all the entries from the inactive sidebar to the inactive widgets area.
This then allows wordpress to delete the sidebar
I normally log out and in again at this stage – probably not needed, but I’ve never bothered to check
    Then basically reverse the above
    Re-enable bbpress tweaks
You see the bbpress sidebar returns
Drag the entries back from the inactive widgets area to the sidebar
