 * I also noticed that the recent post section on the main page is shifted to the
   left due to the sidebar widget section.
   Is there a way to remove this so that
   the recent post section can stretch across the whole page?

 * The theme has a two-column layout.
   Currently there is no built-in option to globally
   disable the sidebar.
