[Resolved] Really basic question before I start

  • Apologies if this has been covered 1000 times but I can’t find the answer.
    (Please assume I know nothing, and the tech language of websites is entirely alien to me … although my level of understanding can’t be summed up that simply.)

    I’ve played around with a wordpress.com blog and it all seems simple enough.
    I have bought hosting and a domain name through 123-reg (UK) and I know they support WordPress, and now I need to create a website that will use this.

    If I download WordPress (the software) is there a significant difference in the GUI and the process of designing pages etc compared to a wordpress.com hosted blog?

    I’ve also seen mentions of installing WordPress in a folder on my hosting, but I really don’t understand the implications of that. (None of the web pages or youtube videos I’ve seen have helped me get my head round it.) Can anyone explain it to me in lay terms please?

    Thanks for the link, songdogtech. I’d already read that article, but unfortunately it doesn’t actually answer either of my questions.

    All I can add is read a bunch of the documentation regarding installing WordPress, theme development, the text vs. visual editor, etc. http://codex.wordpress.org/Main_Page And search these forums for previous answers when you have real specific questions.

    Self-hosted WP is more extendable then .com. It’s best to install WP in root so you don’t have /wordpress/ in your URL.

    Thanks again sondogtech.
    I’ll try a the most specific question I can think of, if you’ll excuse my persistence:

    Is the GUI for the version of WordPress you download and instal essentially the same as the online version?

    Yes; that’s explained in the docs linked above.

    I have a problem with my wordpress, i cannot login my dashboard anymore but i uninstalled it with my host then re-installed fresh but all the plugins were still there and the error was there so how do start wordpress over fresh like a first time user or fix that problem

    @riller:

    1) Don’t spam a bunch of old threads with the same question.

    2) It’s impolite to jump another thread: start your own topic with your issue.

    Thanks soundogtech. I really have looked for this information in lots of docs, but still haven’t found positive confirmation, so your tolerance of my persistent noob question is appreciated.
