Reading WordPress backups

When I do my blogging, I write directly on the website. I don’t have a copy of what I written in my own files. I do get my website backed up daily, so what I write is backed up, but I would also like to have copies of my written work on my computer. When I download a backup to my website, the data containing the written content of the site is unreadable.

Is there anyway to convert the written content of the backup files to something that’s readable?
