Seriously Simple Podcasts looks like a great plugin. Thanks so much for the work you’ve put into it. I’m just about to start using it.

As for the Seriously Simple Stats, I have a few questions:

    1) How much of an episode has to be played for it to get counted in the stats? Or does it just have to get downloaded? If someone subscribes but does not listen, is their automatic download counted as a listen?

    2) Can SSP deliver Premium podcasts (where the user has to authenticate to get the episodes)? If so, does Seriously Simple Stats include Premium Podcasts?

    3) Seriously Simple Podcasts can split feeds into Series. If this is done, are the stats given for each series feed? Are the aggregated stats also given?

    4) Can stats be viewed by demographics? Knowing which countries are listening would help for targeting ads.

    5) I’m wondering what is meant by the labels on the graph. Are “Direct Downloads” those episodes downloaded to a podcast app on a Smartphone? Are “Audio Player Listens” and “‘Play in new window’ clicks” listened to on my WP site? Does “Other” mean Smartphone apps regardless of whether they are Android or iOS? Does iTunes/iOS include downloads to iTunes on a computer?

    6) If a user has trouble downloading and tries multiple times, is there anything built into your algorithm to prevent this from creating false stats? i.e., don’t count multiple downloads to the same address that occur within a short time interval?

Thanks in advance for helping me make sense of the stats.

    Hi there

My sincerest apologies for only getting back to you now on this.

Thank you very much for your kind words. We really appreciate it.

Please find below answers to each point below:

    1) Once a user clicks on the ‘Download’ or ‘Play in a new window’ button and a page has loaded, this will be counted towards the stats. Users subscribing to a feed won’t automatically count this though.

    2) Unfortunately not. You can password protect your feed, however this won’t be able to be submitted to third party platforms such as iTunes. You can however install a membership plugin on your site to only show content to paying members.

    3) All stats are based on each episode and not on a series at this point in time.

    4) Unfortunately not at this point in time, although we are looking into this for a future release.

    5) Direct downloads refer to the ‘Download Episode’ link found below the player or if played through a third party app. We’ve tried to record and be as specific as possible with which source the play/download came from, however there are some platforms that we’ve been unable to detect or will be detected in a future release. These will then fall under the ‘Other’ category/label.

    6) Yes. We have checks in place to make sure that multiple clicks or refreshes aren’t recorded to prevent false stats being sent through.

    I hope this helps?
