Yes, I have the latest version, 2.1.3 installed.
In the meantime two new problems cropped up:
1. My Tables of Contents Plus have magically disappeared from the archive pages for the Page Categories;
2. The Tables of Content on normal pages show strange variations in font size when your plugin is active: in some of the titles some of the words in the table of content are al lot smaller. When I deactivate your plugin, the table looks normal again.
Of course #1 is not really a problem for me, because I don’t need full pages but page excerpts, in which tables of content are useless anyway.

Concerning:
The search box for this theme does yield page excerpts.
If it’s a theme problem, what alternatives do you suggest for a non-commercial site with lots of text?
This is a theme problem and as plugin developer i cannot give theme support.
Second problem: the widget creates the title ‘Categories’ in the side bar, but nothing else, whatever I try.
This seems to be that you have choosing the wrong widget … take the “Category to Page WUD” widget to display page categories/tags.
The widget you have selected is the standard WP widget for categories.

Category to pages WUD, only use PAGE categories and tags, not other content …

If it’s a theme problem, how come the search plugin Relevanssi does manage to show page excerpts in its search results where your plugin fails?
I did use the Category to Page WUD widget and it simply doesn’t work.
Tables of Contents Plus is a plugin that creates tables of content. Sure, I could give you a screen shot but my description is clear enough. As I said, the main problem is that your plugin doesn’t yield page excerpts but only whole pages. If you cannot solve this problem, other, minor corrections are a waste of time as far as I’m concerned.

I will prepare this weekend a new release and will add excerpt mode into it.

3 solutions for this weekend:
1 : provided excerpt for pages and excerpt length.
2 : extra box to enter a different name then ‘categories’ only.
3 : shortcodes [wudtag] or [wudcat] to display categories or tags anywhere.

* Added: Excerpts for pages (on/off), will show/hide archive pages as excerpts and add/remove excerpts field to pages.
* Added: length excerpts for pages, which is the length in words to show on the archive page.
* Added: shortcodes to display page categories or tags.
* [wudcatlist] Displays categories as list.
* [wudtaglist] Displays tags as list.
* [wudcatdrop] Displays categories as drop down.
* [wudtagdrop] Displays tags as drop down.

Works like a charm.
Excerpts: check.
Length of excerpts: check.
Even the interference with my Tables of Contents Plus has disappeared.
As for the widgets:
I didn’t realize the WUD widget responds only to unique page categories/tags.
If you use regular categories/tags (the ones that WordPress uses for posts by default), you need the regular categories widget.
The same is true for your shortcodes (wudcatlist et cetera): they work only with unique page categories/tags, not with the regular ones.
You might want to explain this in the manual.

If you make the settings/options dialogue just a little more explicit and regular, like for example Word Fence and Relevanssi, that will be even more effective than an up-to-date manual.
