• My theme is twenty sixteen. I’ve been trying to no avail to get some kind of “read-more” application to work. I’ve tried everything, I think, including Collapse-o-Matic, with the shortcode. Absolutely nothing works. I have three questions:
    1. Is there something basically wrong with my site? (Everything else works fine)
    2. Is my theme at fault here? I used a plugin, as well as the usual tag feature in my blog. That didn’t work. (All I get is a blank where the “read-more” is, on preview.)
    3. If I change themes, what could the result be? Am I able to switch back to my original theme if the new one doesn’t work? I know to backup before doing this, but I would really appreciate an answer, if possible. My hair is turning white, day by day!
And finally, how can I assess the theme properly before installing it?
    Thank you very much.

  • We need more information here:

some kind of “read-more” application to work

Wordpress has a built-in read-more function. In what way are you trying to change or augment this feature? Please tell us what your goal is, what you’ve tried to achieve that and what the result have been.

    2. Is my theme at fault here?

You can always try switching to a default theme, like 2017. But you’re already using 2016. Still, I would try switching to 2017 to see what happens.

If I change themes, what could the result be? Am I able to switch back to my original theme if the new one doesn’t work?

The answer to the first question is “we don’t know”. It all depends on the theme. The answer to the second question is “yes”.

You have a cool site. Please give us more information so we can help you.

Okay, I know with certain themes you can activate the read-more by simply clicking on the read-more button. My other domain, I use this and it’s fine, just fine. No problems. I did notice that at one point as I was working through my blogs, editing, etc, on my pulp fiction site, that I did see read-more several times, but for some reason they disappeared.

So what I did first was I just dropped that tag in where I wanted the break. I made sure it was beyond the minimum no of words, because I believe that can alter it. Nothing.
I tried the traditional read-more plugin from WP, and used that WITH the tag, and that didn’t work.

I tried Collapse-o-Matic, with the shortcode. I inserted [expand title=”trigger text”]hidden content[/expand]. The video I watched showed me exactly what to do. I inserted [expand title= “the last sentence before the break”] Deleted hidden content, and placed [/expand] at the bottom. The result: the shortcode just appeared on my visual, that was all.

I just noticed something weird. When I went to italicize hidden content, the shortcode filled in the blank. I didn’t use the hidden content</em, because I didn’t see it in the instructions. Go figure!

Thanks, if you need any more information. I’d love it if someone could just go into my back office to really get to the bottom of it! (lol).
Thanks for your help so far. I hope I can resolve this because it’s been driving me nuts!
