Re-direct Problems (3 posts)

I have just installed WordPress to replace a HTML site. I'm using cPanel to redirect old pages to new pages, using a 301 redirect.

However, I have noticed that in a number of cases, having set up a redirect, if I delete the old html file, then the redirect stops working, resulting in a 404 error. When I replace the old html file then the redirect works again. Can anyone explain what's happening.

That happens because you are redirecting from an old URL. So, it should exist. You may try using an .htaccess redirect (place the file at the root directory of the old site) to overcome this problem.

Thank you very much for your reply.

But I am using .htaccess for the redirects (using cPanel). I am not redirecting from the old html file itself.
