I’ve been reading about this in various places, while I didn’t find the exact problem elsewhere or a fix to resolve this exact problem for that matter.
However I have noticed that when you set the static page via Settings > Reading you can designate what you want to be your home page and what you want your blog page to be that being said the default recent posts widget that is packaged with WP will not show, but other widgets will!
You can try it yourself, no matter what theme I use: Please note that the problem occours when using this URL http://www.thenetdude.com it works fine if you do http://www.thenetdude.com/home sometimes but it always works on http://www.thenetdude.com/about /archives, etc.
I have read that I needed to change the default home.php but that doesn’t make any sense as it doesn’t seem to be theme specific.
