    Hello –

Thanks for a great theme! The update works fine, but I updated it on a staging site and the front page, header, and footer became mangled with a bunch of default blocks that I had to manually removed to get my original homepage back. Happened on a staging site, so I’m glad I tested before, but now I don’t want to update the rest of my clients/sites.

Is there a way the defaults can not apply if those templates have already been modified?

    Thanks.

    Hello, Christina.

Thank you for the detailed report. Could you please share some screenshots of the broken layout? This would help us better understand the specific issues you encountered.
Regarding the header and other templates – if you had previously customized and saved them through the Template Editor, they should actually be stored in your database, not in the theme files. This means your customized version should take precedence over any theme files. If this isn’t happening, there might be a specific conflict we need to address.
    To help us troubleshoot:

Could you confirm if you had saved your custom header through the Template Editor before the update?
If possible, please share screenshots of both the broken and correct versions of your header, footer, and homepage.

    Hi Tyler:

I recreated this issue using a different website I manage.

I setup a staging link that has the broken version. It is completely reset. I updated from 4.3.2 to 4.3.4 (since there’s another version): https://staging2.finarina.com

This is what this website should look like: https://finarina.com

I have several screenshots below to show the differences. It basically blew out all my custom styling and parts on the theme. Please let me know if you need anything further!

    Hello Christina,

We’ve double-checked the Variations theme and didn’t find any issues. Our main website, https://tyler.com/, is currently running on the Variations theme, and we regularly update it. We haven’t received any reports of similar issues from other users of the theme.

As previously mentioned, any changes made to the website layout through the WordPress admin panel (e.g., layout width, custom colors, custom patterns, menu structure, etc.) are stored in the website’s database. Updating the theme does not affect the database, so such changes remain intact after updates.

If any changes were made directly to the Variations theme files, it’s recommended to use a child theme to ensure that your customizations aren’t overwritten during future theme updates.

    Hi Tyler:

No changes were made directly to the Variations theme files. I understand that the blocks’ configuration is saved in the database, but when the sites are upgrading from 4.3.2 and above, it is resetting certain wp_options and wp_postmeta values.

That being said, this is not happening on all websites I have configured with Variations, so I will continue to test upgrades on staging environments and then debug reset style/random default block inserts as I find them.

    Closing.
