 * How would I make it so that wordpress is only used as a blog engine in my website,
   so that I would still have my layout of the website, but be able to use wordpress
   to just add posts in the main content area and on other pages

 * You would have to create a custom skin of your website and activate it in the
   blog’s appearence. If you’re good with PHP you can customize it further.
