 * Hi,
 * we need to add several characteristics to our products that will also be displayed
   on the product page. Most of these characteristics involve unique values though,
   i.e. serial number or product content. So the values for these are never the
   same for two products(unlike color for example, which could be the same for several
   products). So how would you advise/recommend for us to set the characteristics
   up? Using attributes does not seem like the best way since we would end up with
   600+ values for each attribute. Would you say it is better to use custom fields?

 * Hey [@barb55](https://wordpress.org/support/users/barb55/),
 * It might come down to where you want them to display. Custom product attributes
   can be used and they’ll appear automatically in the product tabs on the product
   page. If you need this information to appear elsewhere on the product page, then
   custom fields would most likely be easier to implement. Either one should be
   possible though.

 * [@3sonsdevelopment](https://wordpress.org/support/users/3sonsdevelopment/) Thanks.
   How could I use the filter widget though if I use custom fields?

 * That’s a great point. The filter widget will only work with _global_ attributes.
   Custom fields and custom product attributes can’t be used to filter via the widget.

 * [@3sonsdevelopment](https://wordpress.org/support/users/3sonsdevelopment/) that
   was my question: How could the widget be modified so that you can filter by custom
   field?

 * I don’t know of any way to do that. The filter widget essentially applies query
   strings to the end of the URLs. WooCommerce has built-in functions to filter
   results based on these. There’s not a built-in mechanism to do the same for custom
   fields.
 * So it’s not just the widget that would have to be modified but the mechanism
   that actually does the filtering.
 * I did some searching for a plugin that does this and came up empty. You could
   get someone to custom code this for you if you want to go that route.
