Support » Fixing WordPress » Question about what to do after a hack

  • Hi, my site was recently hacked, and my host advised that I check for all infected files and upload fresh data to my WordPress account to rid of all viruses, after they removed everything and assigned 404s on their end.

However I am not technical at all, and having lost my developer whom I usually rely on for issues like this, are there any free plugins that will do all this clean ups for me? I’m currently using iThemes Security and Wordfence (free version). Will this suffice?

Carefully follow this guide. When you’re done, you may want to implement some (if not all) of the recommended security measures.

If you’re unable to clean your site(s) successfully, there are reputable organizations that can clean your sites for you. Off hand, couple of names that come to mind are Sucuri and Wordfence.

I have the free Wordfence plugin installed and it scanned the site, will that clean up the site for me?

you will need to close the backdoors. Otherwise the problem will recur.

As far as limitations of the wordfence plugin is concerned, please ask at https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/wordfence so the plugin’s developers and support community can help you with this.

What kind of backdoors are you referring to, like changing my username and password?

Changing WordPress (and other website related) passwords is one of protection methods. You need to understand and locate how this infection was injected and close this hole otherwise reinfection will occur periodically.

As first steps you need to perform full website audit (check core files integrity, WordPress database and plugins/themes files).

The next step to upgrade all upgradable software (plugins and themes) used on your setup.

Once you done perform internal (server side) scan once again to verify all malware removed and website keeps clean.
