    Hey, guys!

I’m very happy to see you finally added support for WebP files.
I noticed there is a noticeable quality difference between the original (optimized) files and the WebP versions, even though the optimization level is set to Normal. (lossless compression)
Is this a bug or is this something normal with WebP files? I feel like the drop in quality is significant when switching to WebP.

    Hi @eusebiuoprinoiu

    Thanks for your patience.

This highly depends on the image itself.

Example, can you see the difference between these two images in terms of quality? – https://www.screencast.com/t/bsdPlOqw8KB

One is JPEG (optimized by Imagify) and one is WebP (created by Imagify). The image is optimized in Aggressive level.

It would be great to send us the problematic image so we could take a look and see what could be a problem.

    Best Regards

    Hello!

For those kinds of images (photographs), the quality difference is less noticeable.
But for illustrations, screenshots with text, graphs, charts, or even studio photos of products (on white or simple backgrounds with soft lights and shadows), WebP is unusable.

Here is a side-by-side comparison for each compression level. (for an illustration)
    Normal: https://i.imgur.com/EpJJnna.png
    Aggressive: https://i.imgur.com/jEely1U.png
    Ultra: https://i.imgur.com/pKAtLVU.png

Even on the Normal level (with lossless compression), there are artefacts everywhere, the lines are jagged and blurry, and the shapes have undefined and blurry margins.
And as we increase the compression level, things get even worse.

    Hey @eusebiuoprinoiu,

Just to let you know – although this kind of loss of quality can be expected for this kind of images, we have taken your and some other examples, and working to improve their conversion quality as much as possible.

    Thanks for pointing this out.

    All the best!

    Thank you! I appreciate it!
In the meantime, I tested a few of the free conversion tools available online and most of them had much better results, so my guess is your compression settings are too aggressive.
I don’t care much about the Aggressive and Ultra settings (since I rarely use them), but on the Normal level, which is supposed to be lossless, the quality drop should be minimal or nonexistent.

    Hi,
We’ve pushed an update to WebP on normal settings.
    Could you retry?

    Unfortunately, I can’t see any improvements…
Is this update something you did on your servers? Or did you push an update to the WordPress plugin? (because there is no update on wp.org)
