• I followed the five minute upgrade directions last time (to 2.6.1) and everything works. During that process I re-uploaded both of the default themes. Is that really necessary?

More to the point, are the default themes being updated internally to keep up with the new versions of WP? The only reason I would use them is in case I broke something in my theme and wanted to check if it’s theme-specific. If they aren’t being internally updated, then they wouldn’t help for that. Plus, there would be no reason to keep uploading them.

    sometimes, yes.

    Thanks.

In the WP ‘root’ there are about two dozen files that appear to be updated as needed – some are updated each time and some are not. Last time I updated, I checked the file date and left alone the ones where the date didn’t change. Is that a safe assumption, using the file date, or should I just update everything each time, even if it looks like it’s the same file?

I guess there’s no reason not to other than the upload time, plus my FTP client keeps asking me “Are you sure?”

Your call as to how you update. For my usual daily update (I run the bleeding edge trunk code on my personal site), I just upload with “newer” files. When a release comes out though, I upload with all files, just to be sure.

    Cool.

But if we really want to be “sure” we’d have to nuke the planet from orbit.

Hudson: Let’s just bug out and call it even, OK? What are we talking about this for?
Ripley: I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
    Hudson: F***in’ A…
Burke: Ho-ho-hold on, hold on one second. This installation has a substantial dollar value attached to it.
    Ripley: They can *bill* me.
