  • I have WordPress multi-site up and running. This is a sub-folder installation. I am using this to host several separate websites, each with their own domain name. To do this I am using MU Domain Mapping Plugin (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-domain-mapping/).

Everything appears to be working properly.

Quick question regarding how search engines will index these sites…

I have my main wordpress site, and two other “sub” sites. For example:

    mydomain.com
    mydomain.com/site2
    mydomain.com/site3

I have then mapped the 2 sub sites to their own domain, for example:

    newdomain2.com —> /site2
    newdomain3.com —> /site3

Again, all of this is with the MU plugin and a couple new A records.

I’m fine with having my sub folder URLs forwarding to the “new domains”, however I do not want Google and other search engines to index the sub folder URLs. Simply put, I want Google to always index:

    newdomain2.com

and not ‘mydomain.com/site2’. Hopefully that makes sense… and I’m pretty sure this is how it works but I need to check before I bring more clients to my installation. Thanks!

  • Yup, that’s how it works. Search engines should index the actual URL they see the page on, which should be the mapped domain, regardless of any permanent redirects.
