Support » Installing WordPress » Question about Database/PHP

  • I’m thinking about moving my blog to WP from MT. I’m pretty comfortable with CSS, but have not done any work with PHP. I was reading through the Installation docs and it says “have a database ready with proper username and password”. Could someone please explain what this means? What is the database it’s talking about? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

  • Ahh, you need a MySQL database. This is usually included with any base hosting account. If you have a control panel for your domainname/website, this information should be located in there. Otherwise you can always contact your host with a quick email and they can point you in the right direction.

WP uses MySql to store all the data, and mysql is the database application.
This is usually part of a hosting package.
To install WP, you will first need to create a database in your mysql. How this is actually done varies from host to host.
You then supply WP with the database name, your username that you need to access the database, and the password. WP takes care of the rest (pretty much).
Explore your hosting cpanel and check out if you have mysql first.
