[resolved] Quality compromised on resized images? (6 posts)

Coming from a conventional print/paper background, I find it hard to accept that automatic downsizing of my images for different purposes throughout my site doesn't involve compromises. My instinct tells me to upload different sizes of an image which appears in various sizes on my pages - then I know that I have optimised each one in Photoshop and that they should therefore display at their best (except perhaps when re-sized responsively).

I favour .png file types since these are lossless and will presumably scale better than .jpg compressed images which invariably come with some noise. So can I trust the "machine" to do a professional job of resizing my images - or is it best practice to upload different sizes of the same image?

    Hi,
WordPress handles images very well. This is one of the many strentghs of this CMS.
In Customizr, there are three predefined images size : http://www.themesandco.com/customizr/#images
Yes you can trust WordPress and the theme on this! :-)

Hi boss - loving your work.

But still struggling with this concept that one image size works everywhere via scaling. The pre-defined image sizes are a case in point: the thumbnails are almost square but most other image instances will likely be landscape (or portrait) - so scaling a landscape format image to a near square format leaves some cropping decisions to the machine, which might not crop optimally based on the subject of the image.

I would love to know more about the algorithms used for re-sizing and cropping...unless they are a trade secret.

I would also be grateful to know what are the maximum pixel widths (excluding Sliders) which will fit into the two main sections of my single sidebar layout without scaling or forcing the adjoining section to resize?

    Thank you again.

I agree - which is why you can uncheck "Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions" in Settings -> Media. However, as this change will only affect the images that you upload in future, you may then need to install and run http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/ to ensure that existing images are also cropped proportionally.

You can also manually crop your images (by sizes) in the media library.

Thanks guys. I'm no wiser about how the machine does its automatic scaling and cropping but I will suck it and see. If I have any reservations about the automatic results I can go the manual route.
