I want to install WordPress in the root of a site that already has a CMS system installed. So I do not want to upload the index file. I need to be 100% sure that I do not interrupt the existing CMS system. I only need the interior pages to show.
My purpose in doing this is so that the WordPress pages will not be buried and will have a simple url such as: http://www.example.com/marysmith
    instead of http://www.example.com/teachers/marysmith

    Has anyone done this before.

You need to install WordPress in a sub-folder. You cannot run a WP site without that index.php core file. Are you planning to replace your old CMS at a later date?

No I am not planning on replacing the old CMS later. I was pretty sure that I could not do what I wanted to do. I just thought I might see if anyone out there had a way of doing what I want to do.

You simply cannot run two CMS application from the root domain – no matter whether you’re using WordPress or anything else.

OK Thank You for your time!!!
