• I have a client with a frustrating issue. This problem popped up a few days ago. GB 4.3 on WP 4.9.8. He started to relentlessly get “Update Failed” “Save Draft Failed” “Autosave Failed”, “Publishing Failed”… well, you get the idea. The plugin became completely unusable. But just for HIM, on two different sites.

With hair-tearing frustration, I have not been able to reproduce the behavior on my system with any combination of Platform, OS, Browser, or device. We’ve not been unable to figure out what difference in his access that … well, makes a difference. Why should the same install work for me and fail for him?

Since they is my client’s live, working sites, he has disabled Gutenburg utterly and has switched back to the Classic Editor and installed Advanced TinyMCE to increase it’s functionality. So I can’t further test in different environments.

I felt he dove into using Gutenburg prematurely, having been impressed with the slick visual “block” interface. Now he has become rather hostile to “[Derogatory Characterization] Gutenburg” and has become, somewhat understandably, very critical of Gutenburg’s development team, practically on the eve of the WordPress 5 release. I plan to recommend he (and other clients) NOT update the to the initial release of WP5 until at least a round of bug-fixes and updates, and absolutely not until safely after the holiday season!

  • I just ran into a similar issue. Using GB 4.5.0 and WP 4.9.8. The “Update Failed” message appeared when trying to update a post.

The fix for me was to clear my browser’s cache AND cookies.
