When I publish a post on Facebook, I publish almost the entire text on Facebook. I know that you can change the text yourself, only by default the title of the post is already filled in. Why then does publicize take almost the entire text?

Hi @marijnvdgruiter , could you send a link to the affected post so we can take a look? Facebook does have its own algorithms for deciding what they will show. If the post is very short it may show all of it.

This is a bit tricky. Our page has a lot of likes and therefore we cannot just post a message and leave it for a long time. I don’t know if you can reproduce this yourself? it is very easy; link a Facebook page to Jetpack publicize. Create a new post, check in Gutenberg if the title is filled in at Publicize and do not change it. You will see that almost the entire post is posted.

It says 125 more words so it would seem it didn’t quite show the whole thing.

Can you try setting the Publicize message to see if that helps?

When I edit the publicize message, the text will appear on Facebook as I entered it. Only for me that is the strange thing. Because if you do not change anything, the post title is always the default. When you publish something it comes like the image that I sent you above. But when I manually add the exact same title again, only the title will appear on Facebook and not as you can see in the picture.

Isn’t that a bit weird? You would think this is a bug because the post title is filled in by default, so it should also grab publicize but publicize doesn’t.

This is actually as it should be and if I manually add the title again: https://ibb.co/jMBbmwS

I’d recommend setting the custom message, and a featured image too for good measure. But if you don’t want to do that, and you don’t want to share a link to the post so we can troubleshoot, you may be able to find more information with Facebook’s Debug tool.

Paste the post URL there. That will show you the information they’re using to construct the the sharing preview, along with a preview.

As soon as I post an article on Facebook I will send the link. You can view it.

Only I have the idea that you do not fully understand me. It is very difficult to explain, but the screenshots above indicate the problem perfectly. In publicize via Gutenberg the post title is always standard. When I do not change it, the title and a link on Facebook, but a long part of the text, comes together with a link. If I remove the post title in publicize and again type exactly the same title, the title and a link will end up on Facebook.

I find this very strange because if you do not change anything in publicize by default, the title and link should also appear in Facebook, but that does not happen.

It’s hard to tell without looking at the links and the posts, so links to the posts themselves would be helpful if you’re willing to share. I can test on my own private test Facebook page.

But from what you’re describing, it sounds like it’s just avoiding printing the title twice. If the title matches the description, grab some other content, etc.

You might also try filling in the excerpt field, since that can be edited after posting. Then you could send a link to an existing post. I’ll be away from my keyboard tomorrow and Sunday, so if I can help you sooner I’d be glad to.

I just published a post that should remain on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/112.vlissingen.souburg/posts/2050590338404874

I did not change anything in Publicize. As I said before, the title of the post is filled in by default and that is enough for me. As you can see the post on Facebook is completely different and the title is not displayed but a complete piece of the text along with a link.

I hope you can fix this as it is quite annoying. Thanks in advance!

Thank you, did you update the excerpt / description after publishing? I see it currently in Facebook’s debug tool, and currently if I share the post I see the title and description rather than the full post.

No, I haven’t updated anything. The link you received was not modified after publication.

OK. Did you set a custom social media message prior to publishing, and did you save that?

Can you confirm which editor you’re using?
    – WordPress.com/post
    – wp-admin/post (blocks or classic)
    – Which browser and operating system?
    – Or, are you using A mobile app (which one?)

It sounds like you may be seeing a bug so please send whatever information you can.

Also, if you set the social media message prior to publishing, then save the draft, and then publish, does the correct message show on Facebook? I’m testing on my end and trying to see what you see.

Thanks for your response. I use the wp-admin with Gutenberg blocks. I posted from my Mac Mini (latest macos version via Safari and from a Windows laptop (also latest version Windows 10, 2004 build) via Edge / Chrome. I was not using the mobile app.

I noticed today that when I posted and manually added the publicize text, the title of the article in this case, it was not posted but much of the text was posted as I showed you earlier via screenshots.

I just created a message as a test, filled everything in and recommended a custom test at publicize (article title). I saved the article as a draft and posted it after a few minutes. After publishing, it is not the custom text (article title) but again the long text that is known to you.

If I can make a suggestion; I always fill in the summary for posts in WordPress. This summary will then appear on the RSS feed page for articles. Why don’t you use this summary as a description for Facebook? This seems much more logical to me.

Personally I like to have the article title on Twitter with a link (summary card) and on Facebook I prefer to have my own completed summary with a link snippet.

Can you give a link to the post on your site that you’re speaking of here?

We need to see the actual post on your site, and the Publicized post on Facebook, in order to properly investigate what’s going on here.

Are you referring to the Excerpt field in the Editor? That is added to the OG:content meta-tag in your site’s HTML header, and Facebook uses that for the preview of your post they generate on their end.

That is not used for the actual status update that gets posted to Facebook – the status update uses a link to the post, and whatever you type in the Publicize message box. By default that is the post title, unless you add a custom message.

It sounds like that custom message is not working for you, correct?

It is not possible to have Publicize post different content for the same post to different platforms. If you want more direct control over what posts to Facebook, you’ll need to share your posts there manually instead, after they’re published.

It does not seem to work. If I enter a custom message, a text generated by the system will still appear on Facebook. It concerns the following links on my website:
    https://www.112vlissingen-souburg.nl/2020/06/09/23419/fietser-gewond-na-ongeval-op-kerklaan-nabij-draaibrugpad/

Sending the link to the Facebook post makes no sense because I’ve already modified the description here because I find the text generated by the system very ugly.

I hope you have enough information, because I have passed all this on to your colleague and I have little time to continue to do this continuously.
