[resolved] Publicize to Facebook fails to work. (7 posts)

So, yeah, posts from my site don't show up on Facebook.

I have disabled and deleted all possible plugins that might post to Facebook and cause problems, instead making sure that only Jetpack is in. I also did the disconnect and reconnect thing, just to be sure. Jetpack is version 2.7. Theme is 2010 Weaver (yes, fine, I like it and don't want to redo it all over again right now).

This is the output from the Facebook page for the crossposting and I don't understand any of the Open Graph warnings, mostly because I don't even know what it is or what it means, or what I need to do to fix this - shouldn't the 'implied' things be stated outright by Jetpack:

I had a look at your site, and checked your latest post in Facebook's Debugger:
    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geoffdepew.com%2F2014%2F01%2F30%2Fcouple-things%2F

I do not see any warnings there, so Open Graph should not cause any issues with Publicize. Have you managed to solve the issue by yourself in the past few hours?

I disabled the WordPress SEO plugin and the errors disappeared. That was after updating Jetpack to 2.8 today, however.

It also let me access the JetPack Debugger, which I get errors when trying to access it with WordPress SEO active.

So I think the issue is, in fact, the WordPress SEO plugin. After installing 2.8, it wouldn't work; with WordPress SEO out of the loop, it does work.

(still not 100% happy about the random picture that Facebook picks, though. Got to be a way to fix that.)

So I think the issue is, in fact, the WordPress SEO plugin. After installing 2.8, it wouldn't work; with WordPress SEO out of the loop, it does work.

Jetpack 2.8 is compatible with WordPress SEO, so I'm not sure what happened there. You might want to give it another try, and make sure that your WordPress SEO settings are correct under SEO > Social in your dashboard. You'll need to activate the OPen Graph meta tags there, or WordPress SEO won't add any tags to your posts.

still not 100% happy about the random picture that Facebook picks, though. Got to be a way to fix that.

When you share a post on Facebook, or when Jetpack Publicize publishes a post to your Facebook page, Facebook crawls the page and looks for Open Graph meta tags in the head to build a complete post preview (with an image, title, description, ...).

Jetpack and WordPress SEO use similar methods to create an image meta tag for Facebook to use; the 2 plugins look for an image attached or inserted into your post.

If you want to display a specific image on Facebook, you'll consequently need to insert an image into your post, or define a Featured Image. It's worth noting that this image has to be larger than 200x200px, or Facebook will simply ignore it.

If you don't wish to add an image into your posts, you could follow the instructions here to force Jetpack to add a specific fallback image tag when no other image can be found in the post:
    http://jetpack.me/2013/10/15/add-a-default-fallback-image-if-no-image/

If you use WordPress SEO, it offers a similar alternative under SEO > Social, in the "Default settings" section.

    I hope this helps.

I am having the same problem: when using the Jetpack share button for Facebook, Facebook pulls the wrong image. My posts each have their own featured image. Each image is greater than 200x200px.

I am using Yoast WordPress SEO and have "add open graph meta data" in the Social section checked.

The Sharing and Related Posts features of Jetpack are the main reason I use Jetpack.

An example post that pulls wrong image is http://blueoakschurch.org/athome/hope-difficult-abusive-marriage/

Putting this in FB Debugger shows that properties are being inferred and need to be defined. I thought WP SEO would do this. I'd prefer not to have to paste in the same image 2x in each and every post (once as featured image and once in the SEO social settings).

I found this article that recommends adding code to my functions.php but I am reluctant to try it.

    Any help?

@blueoaks - this thread is 11 months old and already resolved - so not a good place to get help. Please start a new one here:
