    Trying to make a family/friends only sub-blog to the public blog.

    My site is mainly photo blog Posts with captions. But I want to share some photos privately in a Post style, not as Pages.

    From other Topics it seems that setting a Category is the way to do this, then direct folks to the Category Posts.

    BUT! how to protect them?

    I set password-protected for a test blog Post in a new Category as a test, and it still showed up in the public Posts; clicking on the title led to a enter-password page. I set it to Private and it disappears from the Category list and the public Post stream. So… I need something in the middle, the Category appears in the widget list, visitors click that, which prompts a password, then they get to the Posts.

    Some family members are not too tech savvy so I want to make this easy for them.

    Is this possible? ideally without a plug-in?

    Many thanks!

    Yup, that is default behavior for WordPress.

    Without using a plugin, your best bet is to just make all your family members contributors to your blog, and set the posts you only want them to see to private. (Helps if these are all in a single category, as well, so they can just go to the category archive to see them.)

    They will see nothing until they log in to your site, and once they log in, they will be able to see the posts. Not entirely perfect, but without a plugin, this is the easiest way.

    Kjodle;

    Thanks for the reply.

    I think I saw somewhere that contributors can be set up to be notified of new posts by email? In which case then this approach might work well.

    Also, just remembered I have an unused url registered, and unlimited hosting with my current provider. I could set up that domain with WP, set a very basic static landing page, with Posts… uh… protected somehow… Got to dig back into the support pages…

    Thanks again!
