  • I’m using 2.9-beta-2 (from SVN).
For a while now I am trying to create a category named “C#”, but I can’t cause WordPress thinks I already have one named like that. Confusing it with my category “C++”.
This is highly annoying. I can imagine why this happens and would understand if this won’t be fixed so I would gladly settle with a workaround (like inserting the category directly into the database) if I knew I could then blog about both languages 😛

    Thanks in advance

  • Have you tried creating a new category, but set the category name to C# and the category slug to something like Csharp?

I think it maybe caused by WordPress attempting to create two categories with the same category slug (i.e. URL) as it will ignore the # and ++.
So manually setting it to a different slug will solve the problem.

    It will still tell me:
“The category you are trying to create already exists.”

Ah, but you were on the right track anyway.
Even though WordPress complained (and highlighted in red) the name of the category when I tried what you suggested, I went on and changed the slug for my C++ category from “c” to “cplusplus”.

After that I could do what you suggested and now my problem is solved.

But it seems to me the slug is used to check if a category name exists. Which can be somewhat misleading (at least it was in my case).

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction 🙂

edit: Also, a similar problem seems to exist when it comes to tags. It is impossible for me to tag something with “c#” it will result in being tagged with “c++” 🙁
