Support » Plugin: MailChimp for WordPress » Product is great, Documentation sucks

  • I was able to get mailchimp PRO working on a client site in two locations on the same page, but it was a struggle because of their abysmally poor documentation. I could find virtually no documentation of the shortcodes in their free version and when I upgraded to the pro version, I found classic programmer-type documentation. For example, here is their entire documentation on how to add a shortcode to a page or post:

Showing a sign-up form in your posts or pages is as easy as using the [mc4wp_form id="xx"] shortcode.
You can use the same shortcode multiple times to render the same from more than once.
The table on the MailChimp for WP > Forms lists all your form shortcodes.

Ultimately, it’s a good product, but they would benefit from hiring a competent tech writer.

    Hi rhj4,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. Glad you like the product and will definitely take up your suggestion to take a good look at the documentation.

The documentation is actually quite new and something I am constantly working on improving. The reason I didn’t write more about the Shortcode functionality is because this is not specific to the plugin, they are a default WordPress feature.

I just did a quick Google search to find a good article on using shortcodes but couldn’t really find one besides articles aimed at programmers. Guess this is not solely a plugin documentation issue but also a WordPress documentation issue… Looks like we (as a community) still have a lot of work to do.

Anyway, thanks again and hope you enjoy using the plugin enough to revisit your review for maybe another added star some time later. 🙂

We’ve taken your suggestions on board and have made some mayor improvements to our Knowledge Base. Whilst it’s still a work in progress, I do think we have made some adjustments that you will approve of. If you have any feedback, please let us know!
