 * I tried to update two plugins this morning. The updates were for WPForms Lite
and Ocean Extra. I usually wait about a week to install plugins to avoid doing
them too often since there are often newer updates available within one or two
days. Everything appeared normal – WordPress was put into maintenance mode and
the update of one or other started. Then … nothing. It just sat there. After
a really abnormal amount of time I tried to log into the admin again and got
a message saying the site was in maintenance mode so I’m really stuck. Since
then I have had to get my server provider to re-install yesterday’s backup twice
because I am having trouble trying to get the site back with a Duplicator backup.
This seems to fail with a timeout problem. So I’m really at my wit’s end!! Any
ideas or help would be really appreciated.

 * When you’re stuck in maintenance mode, delete the file ‘.maintenance’ in the
site’s root via FTP or your hosting control panel.

 * Thanks for that. Now I just have to work out why the update(s) failed and why
I can’t restore from a backup!! Happy days until now.
